A Day in a Paddy Field – By Scouts and Guides

On 12/08/2024, the Scouts and Guides of Don Bosco English Medium school Shirva participated in an engaging and educational activity titled “A Day in a Paddy Field.” This event was organized to provide students with firsthand experience of agricultural practices, emphasizing the importance of paddy cultivation in our country.
The day began with a formal stage program held at the garden of Sri.Vijay Dheeraj. The chief guest Ln.Umesh Kulal, the president of Lions club Bantakal who highlighted the significance of understanding traditional farming methods in the modern world.
Principal of our school Rev.Fr.Rolwyn Joy Aranha has emphasized the role of agriculture in sustaining livelihoods and the importance of connecting with nature.
Correspondent of our school Rev.Dr.Leslie Dsouza addressed the students and shared insights on the rich history of paddy cultivation in our region. He also spoke about the challenges faced by farmers and encouraged students to respect and support the agricultural community. The programme also included Journey to the Paddy Field after the stage program, the students, accompanied by teachers, headed to the nearby paddy field. The journey was filled with excitement as students looked forward to the hands-on experience. Upon arrival, they were greeted by local farmers who warmly welcomed them and explained the day’s activities. Activities in the Paddy Field The students were divided into groups, each led by a farmer. The activities began with explanation and demonstration by the agriculturist, a business man Mr. Vijay Dheeraj and members of Lions club Bantakal. Students observed how the fields are prepared for planting and learned about the different tools used in the process. They also had the opportunity to try their hand at plowing, which many found both challenging and fun. they carefully planted the seedlings in the wet, muddy fields. This activity gave them a deeper appreciation of the labour-intensive process involved in paddy cultivation.
As the day came to a close, the students gathered for a debriefing session where they reflected on their experiences. Many expressed newfound respect for the farmers and the hard work they do. The event concluded with a thank you note to the Correspondent, Principal of school for their whole hearted support and thank u note to the farmers Lions club Bantakal, villagers. The delicious breakfast in the morning and lunch in the afternoon was provided. The activity, “A Day in a Paddy Field,” was a great success, providing students with a valuable learning experience that went beyond the classroom.
