National Librarian’s Day

National Librarian’s Day is an opportunity to recognize the vital role that librarians play in promoting knowledge and education. Don Bosco English Medium School celebrated National Librarian’s Day on 10th August 2024. The school quadrangle lit up with charts, flashcards and miniature books celebrating wisdom and knowledge in full splendor.
The formal programme gained momentum with prayer. Shanel of grade 12 compered the programme and Hansel of grade 9 welcomed the gathering. Deep Preeth of grade 10, in his speech accentuated the role played by librarians, focusing on Dr Ranganathan’s key role in library science. The inaugural ceremony was the major highlight creatively reflecting a Gateway to knowledge.
The chief guest of the day, Mrs. Tanuja Suvarna, addressed the students shedding light on the role played by Late, Dr S R Ranganathan. This day commemorates the birth anniversary of Dr. S.R. Ranganathan, who is considered the father of library science in India. A mathematician and librarian, Dr Ranganathan is known for his work in the field of library and information science, particularly for developing the Five Laws of Library Science and the Colon Classification system.
Mrs Tanuja Suvarna holds a master’s degree in library science. She is NET qualified and currently works as a Librarian for St Mary’s Degree College, Shirva.
The Principal, Rev. Fr. Rolwyn Joy Aranha,in his speech, elucidated the Five Laws of Library Science to the students. He spurred a quest to knowledge by his inspiring words.
The students of grade 9 and 3 added colour to the programme through an informative, educative skit and a dance. Both the skit and the dance threw light on reading as a pursuit of knowledge, leaving a deep impression on the students in the audience.
Prizes were distributed to the winners of various competitions held on account of Librarian’s Day celebration. The book donors, to the school library were also recognized. On the whole, the day’s celebration left a remarkable impression, kindling a renewed passion towards reading among the student fraternity.
